Prof. Kwan Mei-Po Elected Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences – Hong Kong’s Only 2025 Awardee

香港中文大學5日宣布，崇基學院院長、太空與地球信息科學研究所所長兼卓敏地理與資源管理學教授關美寶教授，當選世界科學院（The World Academy of Sciences, TWAS）院士，以表彰她對發展中國家科學進步的卓越貢獻。關教授是今年唯一來自香港的新晉院士。

5 November 2025 – The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) announced today that Prof. Kwan Mei-Po , Master of Chung Chi College, Director of the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science, and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Geography and Resource Management, has been elected a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for her outstanding contributions to the advancement of science in developing countries. She is the only scholar from Hong Kong among this year’s new Fellows.

關教授運用地理信息科學與遙感前沿技術，破解城市健康、交通、環境及社會難題。她提出「不確定地理情境問題」（UGCoP）與「鄰域效應平均化問題」（NEAP），質疑傳統以居住地為基礎的環境暴露評估，推動範式轉向「個體流動性」導向。借助實時移動感測與GPS追蹤，她收集高解析度個體數據，顯著降低暴露測量誤差，啟發智慧城市、可持續發展與環境健康研究。她已發表論文逾570篇。

Prof. Kwan leverages cutting-edge geographic information science and remote-sensing technologies to tackle urban challenges in health, transport, environment and society. She identified the “uncertain geographic context problem” (UGCoP) and the “neighborhood effect averaging problem” (NEAP), questioning traditional residence-based environmental exposure assessments and catalyzing a paradigm shift toward individual mobility-based approaches. By integrating real-time mobile sensing and GPS tracking, she collects high-resolution individual-level data that greatly reduce exposure measurement errors related to UGCoP and NEAP. Her work has inspired new research on smart cities, sustainable development and environmental health. She has published more than 570 articles.

關教授屢獲國際殊榮：2023年全球學者學術影響力排名中國地理學第一；史丹福大學2024及2025年「全球前2%科學家」地理領域全球第五；另獲古根海姆基金獎、美國地理學家協會詹姆斯·安德森應用地理學榮譽勳章及傑出學術成就獎等。

Prof. Kwan’s accolades include top national ranking in geography in the 2023 Global Scholarly Impact list, 5th worldwide in geography in Stanford University’s “World’s Top 2 % Scientists” 2024 & 2025 datasets, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the James R. Anderson Medal of Honor for Applied Geography from the American Association of Geographers, and the AAG Distinguished Scholarship Honors.

關教授表示，當選TWAS院士是對其推動中國科學研究的肯定，未來將繼續在地理信息科學、環境健康、交通與城市議題及中國可持續發展領域貢獻所長。
