Features

Isosurface

A Voxler Isosurface extends the concept of the contour line (a line of constant data value in 2D) and frames it in a 3D perspective. Voxler uses Isosurfaces to display a surface of a constant data value that dissects a 3D volume. Color-code and combine multiple Isosurfaces by data value to show discrete values through 3D lattices. Adding Isosurfaces to your model is a simple way of displaying precious metals concentrations, rendering subsurface coal seams, performing 3D data visualization of ground water contamination plumes, displaying threshold levels of inversions of 3D MT (geothermal) data, connecting subsurface anomalies found in gridding borehole data, featuring objects like piping networks and rebar in GPR surveys, and many more applications. Volumetric calculations can be effortlessly performed on your data that is confined to within or outside an Isosurface, which makes Voxler’s Isosurface module an invaluable tool for the geosciences.

Volume Rendering

Voxler employs a direct volume rendering technique to render 3D volumetric data. The Golden Software developers belief that this technique, which is commonly used in medical imaging software, is also a great way to visualize earth and atmospheric sciences data as it allows you to see all aspects of your data within a 3D volume; not just the surface of the data. Voxler’s gridder is used to fabricate 3D lattices from discrete data samples that are gridded to create uniformly spaced 3D lattices of continuous data where all of the nodes within the lattice are mapped to specific color and opacity values. This gives you full control of you data, where with the VolRender module, Voxler allows you have a good look at the 3D contents of your data including the inhomogeneity inside a rendered object with the addition of appropriate opacity mapping. The VolRender is particularly good at displaying chemical concentration values, contamination plumes, and other types of geophysical data in full 3D.

Contours

Golden Software has always been known for its lightning-quick gridding algorithms and its exceptional contour map generation capabilities. These pillar components have been added to the 3D visualization world by being available as a powerful module in Voxler 3. Contours can be added to any gridded 3D dataset to display lines of constant data value along a 2D plane as slices. For a Surfer grid, the contours can be easily draped over the 3D surface by simply adding a Contours module to any Surfer grid file. Voxler's contours can be orientated in any direction though a 3D volume and allow for full control of the contour levels, the line widths, and the color mapping.

HeightFields and 3D Surfaces

HeightFields are simply 3D surfaces. Use Voxler to generate 3D surface maps, 3D terrain models, 3D contour maps, and slices through 3D volumes by adding HeightField modules to your Voxler project. Voxler can create stunning, high-resolution 3D surfaces from numerous gridded 2D data formats including Surfer GRD files, ADF, ASC, BIL, DDF, DEM, ERS, FLT, GXF, HDF, HDR, LAT, P3D, RAW, and VTK. HeightFields can also be fit to any slice of a volume generated from full 3D datasets that have been gridded in Voxler.

3D Borehole Models

Voxler 3 can model straight and deviated well bore in full 3D space. Once a well path is modeled, multiple log variable can be rendered along the well paths simultaneously. In this image, differences in soil type are represented by different colors; differences in friction ratios are represented by different size disks rendered along the bore path. All of the properties are fully editable in Voxler.

Calculate Volume

Voxler now gives you the ability to quickly and easily calculate volumes using both the Isosurface module and the FaceRender module. With a click of the mouse, volumes can be found above or below the specified isovalue or from the number of blocks being displayed by the FaceRender. For an Isosurface, adjust the slider control to change the isovalue and the volume calculation dynamically updates and is quickly displayed in the Property Manager.

3D Voxel Models

Voxler's FaceRender module displays un-interpolated voxel data in a 3D voxel model. Target component values are represented by the different colored blocks. The number of blocks, the average block value, and the volume of the blocks being displayed can be calculated and found in the Property Manager.

Stream Lines

Stream lines are used to display the path of particles through a velocity field, the distribution of velocities of a medium in 3D space. Different colors indicate the magnitude of the velocities. The technique injects massless particles at specified seed points and traces their paths through the field. The particles stop when the new velocity is zero, the maximum stream length is exceeded, or when the stream intersects the bounds of the field.

Vector Plots

A vector plot displays lines or arrows indicating the direction and magnitude indicated by the components of a 3D grid or point data set. The magnitude of the vectors is shown by length and color.

3D Point Clouds and Scatter Plots

A ScatterPlot displays a point cloud as points or symbols in true 3D space. Voxler is very versatile where it can take the XYZ or XYZC data from almost any available worksheet or tabular data format and specify different colors and a variety of different symbology for the different data values in your data, in true 3D space. This creates an outstanding 3D visualization of your data where Voxler’s 3D rotation gives a full view of the relationships within your point data. Voxler also offers several labeling options for the Scatter Plots.

Ortho and ObliqueImages

Orthographic images and oblique images display slices of data. OrthoImages can also be used to display georeferenced image files at the correct map location. ObliqueImages display the image at any 3D direction. ObliqueImages are commonly used to show profiles or cross sections of a gridded volume of data.

Clip Planes

Add a clip plane to any graphic to remove the portion on one side of the clip plane. Add multiple clip planes at different angles to display the area of interest without obstruction.

Axes

Add axes to a plot to display the XYZ coordinate ranges. Axes are color-coded to identify each direction. Change the plane of the axis labels the axis and rotate the labels around a point centered at each tick mark.

Bounding Box

The bounding box is a part of a plot that shows the limits of the XYZ data ranges. It is a good way to show the ranges when the settings produce a graphic that does not cover the entire range, as for some isosurfaces. It also provides a good reference system to orient the graphic output.

3D Gridding

Voxler can take scattered XYZC data (XYZ coordinates with a data value C) and produce a uniform 3D grid using Inverse Distance, and Local Polynomial gridding methods. It also can calculate a large number of Data Metrics within the specified search radii, including minimum, maximum, median, mean, quartiles, standard deviation, variance, count, density, and distance to nearest and farthest point.

More Computational Operations

Voxler provides a number of computational options including filters for eliminating duplicate data points, removing data points based on the X, Y, Z, or data values, calculating normal, distance-weighted, Gaussian averaging, data metrics, and image processing.

Network Manager

The Voxler Network Manager graphically displays the modules (input data, computational, graphic output, info) and their connections. “LED” lights display green, yellow, or red to indicate the status of the module. Click on a module to select it and to display its settings in the Properties Manager.

Property Manager

The Property Manager lists the settings for the selected module with edit boxes, sliders, and buttons for changing the settings.

Automation

Create your own scripts to automate repetitive tasks. You do not need to spend time doing the same process over and over again – write a simple script to simplify your workflow. Operations performed interactively can be controlled using an automation-compatible programming language such as Visual Basic, C++, or Perl. Voxler includes Scripter™, a built-in Visual Basic compatible programming environment that lets you write, edit, debug, and run scripts.

Capture Video

Voxler adds a video record procedure so you can save animation to an AVI file. You can make changes to your maps and images, and have them recorded in the AVI to share with other users. Video settings allow you to control the quality and file size of the output AVI file.

Drape GIS Data and Vector Maps over HeightFields

Drape vector data over HeightFields to create valuable overlays of GIS data and other vector maps that include point, line, or polygon data. Simply import any one of the supported vector file formats (BLN, BNA, DXF, E00, GSB, GSI, KML, KMZ, MIF, or SHP) and drag the connector to a HeightField module to overlay it on the 3D surface. Voxler offers vector overlay customizations, allowing full control of colors, line width, and opacity. All vector overlays are treated as true vectors, so zero pixilation occurs and the points, lines, and polygon borders look crisp and clean at an zoom level

3D DXF Support is here!

You have waited long enough, 3D DXF support is finally available in Voxler 4!

3D DXF files contain a variety of entities and objects, most of which are supported in Voxler 4. The import entities that are supported in Voxler 4 are LINE, 3DLINE, POINT, POLYLINE (which includes the variations of 3D polygon mesh and polyface mesh), LWPOLYLINE, MESH, 3DFACE, and VERTEX. Once a DXF is imported into Voxler, the drawing style for these entities can be changed from shaded to lines (typically a wire mesh) to points. This flexibility provides customized control of the DXF rendering in Voxler 4.

All of these entities and objects can be exported from Voxler, with the exception of MESH and 3DFACE entities. Additionally, surface color mapping is retained in the entities when exporting to 3D DXF, creating an almost exact replication of the resulting 3D DXF file.

Take full control of your data with Voxler's new Worksheet window.

Taking control of your data has never been easier in Voxler with the addition of a full-functioning worksheet window. All point data that has been imported into Voxler 4 can be "hot-edited" in the new worksheet and the edits will be instantly applied to the model in the Viewer window. This "hot-editing" capability allows you to edit the XYZ coordinates, labels, well trace information, and component values and have the model update as soon as the edits are made, transforming Voxler 4 into a great data QC tool.

The new worksheet also provides tools for formatting, statistics, data transformations, and coordinate conversions.

Reproject point data in the worksheet

Reprojecting point data to fit the current coordinates of your project is smooth and seamless with Voxler 4's new projections tools found in the worksheet. Point data can be imported and with a few mouse clicks, your data can be transformed using the coordinates of hundreds of well known, real world coordinate and projections systems. Voxler employs the most extensive and up-to-date coordinate and projection libraries on the market, so any system you can find will be supported and able to be converted.

This new tool allows you to search for known coordinate systems, modify the parameters of an existing system, and create new local coordinate systems.

Import LiDAR LAS Files

LAS files containing post-processed LiDAR data can now be imported into Voxler 4. Multiple filters are available at the time of import that aid in extracting the desired data from LAS files. LAS using any of the ASPRS LiDAR classification codes (unclassified, Ground, Low Vegetation, High Vegetation, etc) can be used to filter points based on the classification codes at the time of import. Spatial filtering is available at the time of import, which can be used to reduce the extent of large LiDAR datasets. Sample filtering is also available at the time of import that can down sample LAS files if necessary. All of these fitlering options can be used in conjunction with one another, making Voxler 4 a powerful LiDAR tool.

User Friendly, Streamlined Data Import Process

The data import process has been completely overhauled in Voxler 4; allowing for all coordinates, components, well trace information, and label columns to be set in the Property Manager. All column headings are preserved through the import process and displayed throughout the Property Manager; increasing the usability of large datasets where tracking and setting specific columns is now seamless. Any column assignments can be changed on the fly, so there is no need to re-import data to change component or coordinate columns.
