A tropical cyclone cannot regenerate if its structure is completely destroyed. In Saudel’s case, its lower-level atmospheric circulation survived passage over land. Upon entering the South China Sea, decreased surface friction combined with abundant oceanic moisture allowed high-level convection to rebuild, prompting meteorological agencies to resume official tracking.

Intensity and Track Outlook

  • Structure: Convection remains displaced to the outer periphery, leaving the central core weak. This structural asymmetry limits significant further intensification.

  • Track: Saudel will move steadily northeast. Upon reaching the northeastern South China Sea, it is expected to slow down and stall, gradually dissipating. A secondary, lower-probability scenario involves landfall near the Guangdong-Fujian border.

Precipitation Hazards

Entrained with monsoon moisture, Saudel’s circulation has expanded significantly, posing a severe heavy rainfall threat across Southeast China:

  • Heavy Rainfall: Coastal areas across Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Guangdong, and Fujian.

  • Torrential Downpours: Southern Taiwan, the Fujian coast, and the Zhejiang-Fujian border.

Seasonal Climate Context

An anomalous northward positioning of the Subtropical High—influenced by El Niño and elevated sea surface temperatures near Japan—continues to steer late-season typhoons toward East China. Coastal authorities and residents are advised to maintain active typhoon preparedness.
